News Comments August 30th 2005

I've had a new idea for topics for this blog. Since I see news that I've often wanted to comment on, I decided to start a news comments portion of this blog. So for the inaugurate edition:

Report dispels idea that Americans see Canada as safe haven for terrorists

Not really much to say here. Only that, um... it's good that they don't see us as a safe haven for terrorists. Otherwise Bush would need to send in the Marines. That wouldn't be good now would it?

Gas crisis looms

This article's beginning is justified and a good read (for those business inclined). However the second half, entitled 'Hidden benefits lurking?' really pissed me off. It's exactly what capitalism has done to our society. Everyone's trying to make a quick buck off anything. I mean sure some jobs will be created, but what kind of jobs are those going to be? Cheap labour practically. And temporary at that too. What is this, disasters help the economy? Why don't you stop thinking about your precious economy and think about the people WHO HAVE DIED OR ARE IN DANGER OF DIEING? But no, I'm sitting in a plush office running simulations on how much money I can gain from this DISASTER. You'd probably enjoy it if we just dropped nukes on cities everytime the economy goes into a downturn eh?

So what benefits are there really? You'll get some (relatively) cheap jobs that are temporary. Funds funnel through the government, poured into the area, which pulls money from other areas. Sorry, money doesn't grow on trees despite what you may have thought. Of course, when you're the largest, richest country around, you can afford to rack up close to $9 trillion in debt. To put that in perspective, Canada has an anual GDP of aroud $1 trillion. Oh, for those of you who don't know, GDP stands for Gross Domestic Product and means 'The total market value of all the goods and services produced within the borders of a nation during a specified period.' (dictionary.com) So it would only take us 9 years of putting everything we produce's value into debt reduction. Not much huh?

That's all for now. Hope you enjoy my ranting... (I need to get some real smilies for this blog. It'll greatly help me convey my feelings.)
